Some folks can flat spin a yarn. Y’know, some people can somehow make the recipe for pound cake sound like the most interesting 10 minutes of your life (and never tell it the same way twice!). While someone else could tell you about a 17-car pileup involving nuns and school kids and firetrucks and Gabriel himself coming in to save the day … and somehow fit it into 45 seconds of, meh.
My mom used to call that the “gift of gab.” The world needs them, but, like the second part of that description said, usually the details would get a little fuzzy to make the story sound more interesting, so we tried not to depend on those folks for facts. A lesson I learned the hard way after proudly reporting that my Papa had fought bravely with Davy Crockett to single-handedly save the Alamo during the Civil War … when I was around 7 years old.

I then discovered the library and started reading a lot of books. Don’t get me wrong, I still loved hearing Papa’s stories, but I checked facts as well 🙂 … Over the years I fell in love with many authors — Poe, Fleming, Dickens, Butcher … well, way too many to mention.

But one thing about books that I realized: a good author could captivate me for a book, a great one could make me want to read a series, and a rare few would make me want to re-read a series.

But there’s only one “book” that keeps getting opened over and over and over. And it’s because it’s not really anything like the others. Yes, you could say that the Bible is a “collection of 66 books,” but I was thinking more about what it IS. It’s the conduit allowing Him, our Creator, to communicate to US.

Christ taught us this communication style right in the pages of that same book, calling them parables … the “this and that” method. As I pick up my Bible I pray for guidance, and God is able to use the words written thousands of years ago to guide me to solve real-world problems I have today.
Just a thought from a guy thinking THAT’S an Author I can definitely get behind 🙂
