Growin’ up in WV meant that country music was… well, institutional. Even if we didn’t want to listen to it personally, it was on in restaurants, grocery stores, relatives’ homes… heck, everywhere. Personally, my mom did listen to some of it, and so did some of my relatives, so the young lady from Tennessee wasn’t a stranger when she hogtied her boss along with her buddies in that movie that made her famous with the city folk 🙂

But it goes a lot deeper than that.
Every time I hear one of her famous songs — Jolene — I can’t help but think of my mother-in-law, Jo (Jolaine). Man, she loved Toni almost as much as I do!!!!

Speakin’ of Toni… I think Dolly’s love of children’s reading may even give Toni a run for her money. She started the Imagination Library to make sure kids could get real books to hold in their hands, regardless of how much money they had or where they came from.

Yes, she was a great superstar and, pardon the pun, put in more than a 9-to-5 day to make sure the bills got paid. But she lived her life truly living the servant’s life… giving back to her beloved community and doing what she could for others.
A true life well lived.

Just a thought from a guy that’s got a tear in his eye for a country girl gone home to be with her Lord.
