My Lil’Buddy’s Always Got a Seat … And Thanks To Him So Do We!!!!

My beloved and I were pickin’ up Lil’Bit today from his Bibi’s (his other grandma) when the Spirit hit me with this one. You see, when Toni was headed in to gather him up, she’d asked me to make sure his seat was prepared. It always is, ’cause as we take him out we do it out of habit… but that got me thinkin’ of a few things. Stick with Pappeye if you don’t mind. 🙂

First, when I was his age we didn’t have car seats (well, technically we did — they were the seats in the car!). The super-duper protection layer if an accident happened was twofold. First, we were fully aware that “God protects fools and little children” (hey, don’t knock it — I still firmly live by that today, just the other one!). Second, our moms all had a ninja reflex that moved twice the speed of Superman and was three times as strong.

Somehow she could be in the front seat doin’ her hair, changin’ the radio, lightin’ a cigarette (don’t judge — it was the 70s!), yellin’ at at least one of us, and STILL be able to stop us from hurtin’ ourselves from twelve feet away. It was a miracle that happened regularly. Don’t ask… but there’s plenty of us Gen-X’ers around to prove that it did!

Next… this ain’t my first VW. My first was a ’72 Super Beetle that, well, looked good. It had “2×70” air conditionin’ — if we rolled down both windows and went 70, we got a breeze. But that safety? Not sure there were even seat belts in the thing originally, and definitely not by the time I got it. Again, not sure if it was the little-kid or the fool rule that applied at that point… but the rule still held. 🙂

And lastly, in all seriousness… it reminded me of my Savior and His promise to His buddies that blessed and dreadful night. He told them He was goin’ to prepare a place for them in His Father’s house, but that He would come back for them. And in the meantime He would send His Spirit.

That’s a promise He kept when He sent the Spirit… and I know He will return one day so that we will all have a place with Him.

Just a thought from a fool who, through His grace, will one day be in His Father’s house with his grandson and the rest of his family. 🙂
