Jesus Freak (Guest Pop! – Tommy Gant)

What comes to mind when you hear this term Jesus freak?

How would you feel if someone called you a Jesus fanatic?

Well that’s exactly what I want to talk about today! In the gospel of Luke chapter 9 verse 23, it says this quotations then he talking about Jesus said to them all, whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me and of quotations.

So in order to be a disciple of Jesus we have to first know what disciple means. A disciple is fundamentally a follower/believer of Jesus who hears from God and then does what he says! That’s the core number one listening to God through Scripture / prayer / fellowship with other believers then number two obeying him! The word itself of disciple means learner or pupil.

But Jesus takes this concept and elevates it by adding for his disciples to follow me and deny themselves. We see these three elements that capture what this looks like in practice number one is a sacrificial commitment. You’ve made a decision to submit to Christ and surrender your will following him regardless of the cost.

No I don’t know about you, but for me denying your fleshly desires is really really hard in this world but that’s what God calls us to do. Number two is relational love. Love becomes the hallmark of Christ followers love for God, love for your neighbor, love for other believers.

Finally number three is transformation. The purpose of spiritual growth is becoming like Christ in word, thought, attitude, and then action! The simple version is this. You’re someone actively following Jesus changing to become more like him, and obeying what he teaches. It’s not passive belief it’s active costly intentional commitment!
