ya know, every year when we would sign up for VBS they would always give us a choice (actually, since i was on the CE committee every year, i was part of the they, but, i digress) … you know what i’d put ??? “wherever you want me” … (well, sometimes i’d put smart aleck things down just to make Mary Ann (our CE director) chuckle) but, it honestly goes down to the core of how i was taught by Pappeye, Rick (my first youth director) and a whole host of others that have had a significant impact on my life … you see, teaching isn’t about KNOWING a bunch of stuff … teaching is about KNOWING how to SHARE what you know with someone in a way that they’ll want to receive it … as a seasoned christian educator one thing i’ve learned about VBS is that the 4^th and 5^th graders at VBS (especially the 5^th graders!) feel they were “too old” for a lot of the fun and games, so, i would make it a point to morph into someone that they could have fun with while learning the lessons and laugh with … definitely NOT the same guy that would then lead a leadership development meeting the following tuesday nor the guy that would chaperon a group of teenagers on a weekend retreat with dozens of other youth groups every year, but, at the CORE of each of those guys WAS CHRIST, the message, and the loving Spirit holding it all together … a 36 slide deck on the benefits of different types of worship would NOT be a way to reach 10 year-olds anymore than an energizer to “fireworks” or a homemade outside game of pacman using water baloons and oreo cookies would work for a group of CE leaders, but, there’s a time and place for both in this educator’s workbook … as we are firmly in this Lenten season and coming up on Easter there are going to be more and more folks showing up in church or possibly asking you questions outside of church … when you go to answer their questions, please remember where THEY are at instead of where YOU are at … just a thought from a guy that has taught folks from many different walks of life 🙂
