Napoleon Ice Cream and MaMa (“MawMaw”)

this week our grocery store had an ice cream on sale (hey, ice cream in January is a thing in Florida, don’t judge :-P) … so they had this really nice display up which took me down memory lane as soon as i saw it … the afternoons in Summersville scoopin’ napoleon ice cream (and gettin’ it all over) while waiting to get the boat filled back up or hot summer days back on Piccadilly Street after helping PaPa (“PawPaw”) on his bread route trying to cool down … now, we used to laugh at the way that MaMa (“MawMaw”) would say that fancy ice cream that had 3 different types in it, thinking she didn’t know how to say neapolitan, but, looking back through the eyes of a grandfather, now’s bettin’ that it was ME that couldn’t say it all those years ago and named it “napoleon” and rather than make fun of me, she just let it stick all those years … you see, that’s the kind of woman, mother, mama, aunt, and person she was … instead of calling folks out on things that didn’t ultimately matter, she’d let them slide … on the other hand, get between her and one of her kids, grandkids, or try and cheat her in the business (she was the business manager side of papa’s bread business) and you had better come with an entire army for back up ‘cause she was a tiger!, but, other than that, she’d run the house and, basically, quietly let us think that WE were the ones that knew it all and were in charge of things … that kind of self-assuredness and grace doesn’t come often and is definitely something that i wanted to take a moment and share with y’all today … if you’ve got a “mama” or two in your family, consider yourself blessed … i know i was and am, as i was lucky enough to have the “og” and then have one as my mommy and somehow found one that i married 😊 … just a thought from a guy that’s now gonna go enjoy a bowl of napoleon ice cream …

Bible Verse
