Hold On Loosely Let’s Do the Twist

Toddlers, records, nuts, fries, fish, and Christ… I must have a screw loose.

All kiddin’ aside (no comments from the peanut gallery). C’mon baby, let’s do the twist.

As some of y’all know, back in the olden days when I was in my teens and early twenties (you know, when dinosaurs still ran around and all), I was a DJ. That was back when DJ actually meant records for the most part. New-fangled CDs were beginnin’ to be a thing, and at the station there were carts, but when I was spinnin’, it was records. And to get one ready while another was playin’, we’d cue it up. Actually take and move the record backwards a bit while the turntable motor was stopped to get it exactly ready so when we hit the button the song would play. Neato.

Now, why am I yammerin’ about that? Well, that reminded me of a lesson my dad taught me about puttin’ a fussy nut onto a bolt. He used terms I’d learned in my world (the DJ booth). He’d said I needed to “cue” it up. Move it backwards a bit to line up the grooves. Heyyyyyyy.

Yesterday we took Lil’Bit to a new restaurant. One we’d been to before but was new to him. The decorations were awesome, but thanks to recent Halloween adventures where things that weren’t moving all of a sudden did, well, let’s say he was a bit hesitant to eat.

Time to cue it up. I started airplane food… into my own mouth. The first landing got a grumpy acknowledgement. By the third landing he was reaching for the fry and had started chowing down. I’d like to take credit for this, but spoiler alert, I’d learned it from… you guessed it.

Right after Christ invited Matthew (Levi) to join His merry band, He went to have dinner. Explaining to all that would listen that He wanted to be where and with the folks that needed Him, not in a pulpit telling them what to do.

Peter was reminded from God that he needed to do the same before he arrived in Caesarea. The result was a lot of folks found Christ.

Just a thought from a former DJ thinkin’ of two songs he used to spin quite often — “Hold On Loosely” by 38 Special and “The Twist” by Chubby Checker. We have to hold on to our loved ones and our faith, but not so tightly that it runs folks off. And when it comes to bringing people into the fold… c’mon baby, let’s do the twist.
