Did I Say It… Then It’s Like Readin’ It In A Book… Welllll……

As many of y’all know, I love and respect my Pappeye. Heck, when it came time for what I was to be called by Lil’Bit, Pappeye was the answer — so that should tell ya all you need to know. Please keep that in mind when you read or hear the rest of this.

One thing he said that would tick a fair few folks off every now and again was a phrase for when he knew he was right about… well… anything. He’d say, “Did I tell you? Then it’s like readin’ it in a book.”

Problem is, he was right most of the time. Dag nabbit.

He’d say it tongue in cheek. It was his way of havin’ us challenge him — prove me wrong, if you dare. He wasn’t cocky. He was confident, loving, and wanted us to know two things: he did know his stuff, and if we didn’t trust him we should look it up.

I was lucky enough not only to learn from him as a child and a young man, but once he moved to Florida, to spend a lot of time with him much later in life. Views I’d always thought were set in stone were, as it turns out, maybe not so much granite as sandstone. Hmmm.

Christ comin’ to earth didn’t abolish the Law. He came to fulfill it — explain it, live it, give us a better understanding of what it is. The Word doesn’t change. How the Spirit moves our heart when we read it — that’s the beauty. That’s the part written on us, not just in a book.

Our takes can be pencil. His Word isn’t.

Just a thought from the second-generation Pappeye, thinkin’ about the OG’s statement. Given there’s now four books out there with a lot of his wisdom in them… I guess his statement came true.
