Final Destination … Our Journey Along the “WAY”

One of our favorite pizza places when I was in junior high was four or five blocks from school. We’d walk down for lunch when we could. It was called 5 Corners … because, well, five streets met there.

It wasn’t the only place in Charley West where that happened. Come to find out, it isn’t the only place in the world either. Not poor planning. Just life. Those roads started long before concrete and city planners. By the time the maps showed up, folks had already decided what they’d decided. Bob’s your uncle. 5 Corners it is.

How we get where we’re goin’ is usually at least half the story — most of it, if we’re honest. How many “perfect weddings” do you actually remember? You remember the fussin’ and cussin’ on the way in. Then on the big day it’s the kid who repeats the word his aunt taught him watchin’ her “show,” and that’s what gets told at reunions for the next twenty years.

God never asked us to sit on our hands until Heaven hands out the prize. When Jacob skedaddled toot sweet toward Uncle Laban, he thought he was just escaping. On that road — stone for a pillow, not a pizza parlor — God met him and said, in so many words, I am with you on the way, and I will bring you home. The years that followed changed him, changed two households, and changed our history. The destination didn’t do all the work. The road did.

Peter doesn’t tell folks to stare at the sky and wait. He says we are strangers here, and that Christ left us an example: follow in His steps. Living for Him is not “Heaven for Heaven’s sake.” It’s trying, today, doin’ what He showed us — to make this stretch of earth a little more like Heaven, and to pave the Way for whoever comes after us.

Just a thought from a guy who definitely goes to the beat of his own drummer … but knows who the leader of the band is.
