Y’all want me to let you in on a little secret ’bout me? I don’t sleep all that much. It’s somethin’ my mom and I had in common, and for years folks just thought we were weird. Come to find out, it’s a thing — rare, but a thing.
Now, my Mama and Papa woke up early too, but I think that had to do solely with the bread route. Mama always went back to sleep after Papa headed off to work, and when I was helpin’ him on the bread truck, the first thing he’d do when we got home was inspect his pillow for a while. 😄

That’s called good hard work and a “split shift.” But what Mom and I had… well, three or four hours of sleep and we were good for the day.
Nowadays some folks call this a “sleep superpower” because of all the things we can get done in the wee small hours. With the interwebs and the 24-hour news and entertainment cycle, there’s always something going on. But for years I think my dad put it best: “Anything that happens between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m. is usually a bad idea unless it happens in a bakery.”

Mom and I always added one extra line to that, though — the kitchen table. We spent hours talking (quietly — there were people sleeping, after all) about anything and everything. She would try to answer my questions about faith, what was going on at school, my future… well, you get the picture. She taught me how to be quiet and ask for guidance during that time. Something I still do — only now it’s with my Heavenly Father.
In studying the Bible, there are several times where Christ models this as well — going to His Father in prayer, spending time renewing and refreshing Himself before going back out among the crowds.

Whether it’s when we wake up, at lunch, or like my beloved at bedtime (or, heck, all three!), any time we’re spending centering ourselves in prayer with our Father is time well spent.
Just a thought from a guy in the wee small hours of the morning.
