Lists… everyone keeps ’em.
Your boss, your mom, your spouse, your friends… heck, even Santa checks his twice each year (though I’m pretty sure he’s using elf labor — is that allowed?!).
But let’s face it: without them, it’d be chaos.
Personally, I’d end up with 14 boxes of popcorn in the pantry and still no butter in the fridge (true story). And all the loudest, easiest complaints would always get handled, while the folks who waited their turn would simply never get their turn. So yeah… lists are good for some things.
God even sent down a pretty powerful list.
Well… He didn’t quite call them a list. “Commandments” is the better word — and it’s got a whole lotta “thou shall” and “thou shall not” in it.
He also knew us by name before we were born… and knew (spoiler alert) that we weren’t perfect. Yet He still gave us this funny thing called free will anyway. How’s that workin’ out……?
Seems like the only Person who ever walked the earth and could take God’s list and say “Been there, done that” fully and perfectly… was God Himself, when He sent His Son to show us the Way.
Jesus showed us that we’re supposed to strive to live by the law and walk in the spirit of the law (see what I did there?), hanging everything on the two Greatest Commandments: loving God with all our heart and soul, and loving our neighbor as ourselves.
And thanks to Jesus — and to truly repenting of our sins — God doesn’t keep track of them.
He doesn’t keep a list.
Our sins are as far away from us as the east is from the west.
Just a thought from a guy who remembers he’s not perfect… but knows a Guy. 🙂
