I’ve shared with y’all before how the Lord’s Prayer really changed for me after teaching that one series of classes. (Cliff notes version: the kids were learning about Exodus and manna… I will NEVER say “daily bread” the same way ever again when you think about how God can literally provide for us every single day!)
Anyhow… the same thing happened to me with Ole’ Glory when I was a whippersnapper of 15. I was in the “Lincoln Singers” putting on a tribute to George M. Cohan, and one of the songs was “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Not sure why, but since then, I’ve never seen her the same way.
Looking at those 13 stripes reminds me of the original colonies that stood up to a much stronger nation — all because they wanted the freedom to worship God as they chose. The blue? That’s the sky and the heavens watching over us. And as those separate-but-united states were added, one by one, they joined together in that field of blue… becoming One Nation, Under God, Indivisible — with liberty and justice for all.

While praying about this, it took me right back to our trip to the Holy Land and Samuel’s tomb. A mosque, a church, and a synagogue — all functioning in the same space, with adjoining schools, not just coexisting but thriving. They’ve got a shared purpose and one God. Just a thought from a guy lucky enough to pick up a brand-new Ole’ Glory in time to celebrate Uncle Sam’s Semiquincentennial (hope he doesn’t need to see a doctor about that one! 😂).
