Birthdays … Honoring our Roots

I’m gonna let you in on a secret … I grew up with, what i thought, was the best parents on the planet … Mom only lost her throne a couple decades ago when a new one took her place (she’d have agreed, heck she gave me her ring when i proposed to the lady!) … Dad … He never let his disability get into the way of being DAD … He was more active than almost any other father out there (fathers are people that go to work and say “that’s nice son” and let mom’s take care of things … DAD’s go to work, but,  afterwards, would take off their ties no matter how tired they were and would still help you learn how to throw the ball or master the takedown or whatever it was you were struggling with that day) …

My grandparents, aunts and uncles … They were the extended family that literally kept us together in the crazy thing that was called life in the 70’s and 80’s … When my dad lost his job and everything looked it’s bleakest, my Nanny and Pappeye opened their house to an entire family and uprooted their lives for 2 entire years while mom got a new degree so we could get back on our feet … That wasn’t a handout, it was a hand-up that this grateful grandson has never forgotten …

The first Bible reading today is something that folks usually “skim past” when reading thru the bible … Honestly, i always called it the “begats and begots” … But, honestly … If you stop and think about it … EACH of those BEGATS and BEGOTS are “Mimi’s” “Mama’s” “Pappeye’s” “Nanny’s” … Mom’s … Dad’s …

Just a thought from a very grateful son, grandson, pappeye, husband, cousin, uncle, nephew, etc etc … On the day before his birthday …

ps … my beloved Uncle Dale started a family “text message thread” about 2 years ago that has brought our family closer together than it has been in decades … It’s something that i would STRONGLY RECOMMED you consider doing if you haven’t done so in your family …
