Hearing and Listening

My mom used to tell me the Good Lord gave me 2 ears and 1 mouth but i never quite got the ratio right as a teenager … (no comments from the peanut gallery out there !!!!) … But, i read  something the other day that kinda stopped me in my tracks … “you hear with your ears but you listen with your heart” … Hmmmmm that one’s deep … How many times do we hear people talking … and, i can’t speak for you, so, i’ll just speak for me here (see, mom, here i go again (pun intended!), more talking than listening, but, i promise, this time it’s for a reason!) …

It seems like the the closer someone is to me, the more i’ll hear their voice (hey, i guess that makes sense) … The most familiar voice for me SHOULD be my beloved, and those closest sounds to me should be the ones i hear the most, and so on and so on and, well, you get the picture … But, it seems like the more i HEAR from folks, the the harder it is to LISTEN sometimes 🙁 … How often am i already thinking about a response to something that someone i love is saying while they’re saying it or forming an opinion or thinking about dinner or … or … or …. and, on the other hand, it seems that when we meet up with folks that we don’t see very often, because those meetings are rare, i do find myself actually listening because of the rarity of the occasion … Ouch ….

I’m definitely NOT saying that i should avoid listening to the folks that i rarely see, but, those folks that truly HAVE my HEART should have more than my EAR too … Just sayin …

Bible Verses

1 Kings 19:11-12 / James 1:19-21

Questions

As i’m pulling the log out of my eye here (or would it be ear 🙂 ) … What do you think of this self revelation ??? Is it something that you (or a loved one) suffer from too ??? (and, for my loved ones, yes, i know you all have a loved one that suffers from it, so, i know your answer is yes! :-P)
