perusing (that’s a cool word, ain’t it!) thru my favorite grocery store today they had a bogo on Pepperidge Farm (hey, they remember!) … which opened the flood gates for this ole guy … you see, y’all hear me go on and on and on about my Pappeye but there was another guy that did a LOT to make me who i am, heck, even giving me his name 2 steps removed, and that’d be my Papa, Cecil Jr, aka Big Buddy … while he wasn’t one to frequent sanctuaries he showed me how to be good, decent, kind, and loving to everyone and give everyone a laugh along the way (as long as you didn’t cross him) … i was lucky enough to work with him in the summers and sometimes in the winter on his bread truck and learned a LOT about life, business, people, and, heck, just about everything (including a lot of jokes that, well, let’s just say my mom wasn’t too keen on) during that time but what i learned most of all was that while he always tried to show everyone how tough and rough he was, he always cared about each and every person he worked with and knew … after he passed away we found out about folks he’d been helping for years without any of us knowing because, well, “big buddy was just big buddy” … did he have is issues, sure he did, but, that didn’t stop him from being the man he was … i often tell folks that i learned everything i needed to know from my dad and two grandfathers about being a husband and father … both by what i wanted to emulate and by what i knew i didn’t want to do … and i hope and pray that both “big lil’bit” and “lil’bit” are watchin’ me and takin’ notes to do the same because Lord knows i’m not perfect and there’s things i’m sure they’ll want to do a bit different as well, but, ain’t that the way it’s supposed to be 😊 ..
