Old and New … Room (and NEED!) for Both

ok …. if you look at the pics before readin’ this i’m pretty sure you’re wonderin’ just what in the tarnation is he thinkin’ this time (honestly, most people think that even AFTER readin’ my stuff, but, there’s that!) … you see, today’s trash day and i saw the “Happy Birthday” sign we’d originally bought for lil’bit and the repurposed for the Baby Jesus and was gonna put it into “file 13” when i decided it could become one of our new household traditions … it’s sturdy enough to make it through more birthdays, and, who says what makes a tradition anyway 😊 … as i was thinkin’ this i then saw my latest project, a gift i was finishing for someone (shh, don’t tell!) in the garage and wondered if it would be something that they’d want to keep and treasure or just another piece of wall art … you see, when it comes to “old” stuff, the only way it gets that way is either we’re too cheap to replace it and it’s just, well, “old” or, it’s “old” because we LOVE it … take my dresser, for example …. my dad spent hours on it decades ago before i moved to Florida to make it as new as it was when it was first presented to me as a kid, that dresser is now in lil’bit’s room right next to the cabinet i made for him that will eventually have full working shelves (they’re breakaway right now because he’s a toddler!) and will hopefully be something that will be “old” for the right reasons … yes, we still buy new stuff for him (see above, trash day and all of the empty boxes, boy he made out this year!) but, ties to the past are important too, it helps us remember who we are and keeps us grounded … in one of the bible verses today it talks about building a new house but on a solid foundation, i love that analogy … we do need to constantly look forward, but, if we forget to look back and remember who we are and where we came from then it’s really easy to get lost … just a thought from a guy who is very lucky to know where he came from and, because of that, knows where he’s going …
