Traditions

tradition …. tradition …. thanks to fiddler on the roof, usually when i think or say it, it’s twice and it’s usually sung in two different octaves (if you know, you know!) … but, today, that’s what i’m on about … traditions are important because, well, they mark important events for us, either personally, within our family, within our country, or within our faith … for example, i know we’re not the only ones that bring down the nativity grouping from the attic every year to set it up, but, in our house, the nativity set we have is one that is old and beat up and has, over time, became a TRADITION to use because it started being something that my son and i did together each year, so, in addition to the meaning that it ALREADY had, it held a deeper meaning to us because of that tradition …. teddy bears can be found everywhere but, when they’re carrying on a tradition of being bought and given to a mom from a son, well, now, that’s something else … and, living in central florida, the teenagers growing up here have a chance to go to theme parks and beaches pretty much year round, but, for years, “mr cecil” would be part of the central florida presbytery crew that would head out blasting 70’s and 80’s music and teaching the kids what it was like to live without their phones for a weekend while we celebrated the Lord in a remote campground with very limited cell service but absolutely no limits to the fun to be had worshiping, floating down the springs, having talent shows, and sharing fellowship … and, yes, in our family, we celebrate donut day (message or contact me if you don’t know what it’s about and I’ll be happy to share with you!) each year as a wonderful tribute and tradition, so, in closing, i’d like you to consider this … are you creating enough traditions in your family to stand the test of time ??? will your young’ens be able to remember with a smile all of the traditions that are being shared right now (heck, will you?!?!) and, how many of those traditions have God in them … just a thought ….. one of the two bible readings today actually doesn’t have to do with traditions, but, traditionally (see what I did there!) it’s the second bible passage that most folks will memorize (the Lords Prayer is usually the first) … God is Good …. All The Time … All The Time … God is Good !!!! (iykyk!) 😛
