Trash Day … Thanks to Him, It’s Paid in Full

Raise your hands up high if you just LOVE chores.

Ok… now.

Raise your hands if you’ve never told a fib or sinned.

Ok… now.

I’m pretty sure we’ve all just joined a new club. Let’s call it the AskAPop Hands-Down We’re Pretty Honest ’Bout This Stuff Club. No membership fee needed. (It’s been paid in full. More on that in a minute.)

Back to the title. Trash day. We live where once a week there’s a chore that yours truly is in charge of: empty the cans in the house, tote everything to the road, and watch it get magically taken away to trash land on a farm where it can live happily ever after with all the other trash.

Before, I’d lived in a place that did it twice a week. Years before that it was burning it in a designated spot on the property. (Wonder why they don’t let us do that anymore.)

But as I was placing it and saying my final goodbye, it got me thinking about something else in my life that regularly needs cleaning. This one doesn’t require a check to the city or the neighbors being able to see what I’ve discarded. Just an honest confession and a promise to try and do better. My transgressions — or debts, as we Presbyterians say.

Hebrews reminds us what was involved before Christ came to, literally, save us. Telling others. Intermediaries. Sacrifices. Scapegoats. And a room where only one was allowed to enter because we were too blemished to talk to our Creator.

Christ’s sacrifice — the ultimate and final sacrifice — tore the barrier from top to bottom. Symbolically and forever it changed the way we are allowed to come to Him. Directly. Through His Son.

Just a thought from a guy doing his chores and never, for a second, forgetting the sacrifice his Savior made for him.
