Totin’ Stuff We Need For Everyday Stuff … and Stuff For A Lifetime

Growin’ up in the 70s in WV meant some things. One of which was that moms carried purses that carried everything. Makeup. VapoRub. Bandaids. Heck, I’m pretty sure somethin’ that would stop a nuclear disaster if it came down to it. Dads, on the other hand, unless they wore a tie, didn’t carry anything but a lunch box. If they wore a tie, they carried a briefcase and no lunch box. It was a rule. Pretty sure Congress passed it or somethin’.

Then this fella came along that was searchin’ for a lost Ark. C’mon, you’re singin’ the theme song. Next thing we knew, messenger bags were in style. Murse is what folks around me called ’em. But they’re handy.

Kids, all types, could carry bags or backpacks. Ways to carry what you needed for the day or the weekend. And then the fanny packs came around. Don’t get me started.

It seems that we’re always comin’ up with better ways than just stuffin’ stuff into our pockets to be ready for the day. Ironically, as things get smaller — a room full of floppy disks could fit on a single thumb drive — it seems that we have to carry more and more.

Walkin’ past my backpack today it got me thinkin’ about it. How much comfort it brings me. And has ever since I’d gotten sick a few years back. Before then, I’d never really taken anything out with me that couldn’t fit in pockets, but that time in my life kinda forced the issue.

My health has returned to the point where I no longer NEED to carry any of the that stuff anymore, but, the backpack stays. It’s comfortable.

When readin’ the Bible, a lot of times you’ll see, especially in Christ’s parables, He’ll mention a line or two of a scripture. Back then folks didn’t have the money to all have Bibles in their homes, and they had to memorize the passages. When He said a single line or two, it was as if He was sayin’ the entire passage.

The Psalms are some of the most remembered scriptures in the Bible for a reason. They’re meant to be packed into our life backpacks so we’ve got them at the ready, when we need them.

Just a thought from a guy that’s always got more stuff than he knows what to do with, but is thankful for his Savior’s guidance on what to take on life’s journey.
