Have you heard the line? “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” Practice, practice, practice.
Christ said as much when He taught us to pray — that Earth would look a little more like Heaven each day. And ya know what? On the weekly trek for grub, diapers, and doo-dads, I spotted a little bit of just that.
My beloved took a detour (YOU try tellin’ the wife of 22 years “if it’s not on the list it’s not in the cart” and see how far THAT goes) down the school aisle to put things that were definitely not on the list straight into the cart. That’s when I spied somethin’ with my little eye that I thought was extinct: calendars and joke-a-day desk sets. For you youngsters, that’s these hangin’ things and memes you can actually hold.
Fascinated by the antiquities — till I noticed the other shelf. Faith books. Bibles. Devotionals. Amen. Right next to the highlighters. And for the folks who journal (it’s all the rage, I’ve heard), a whole row of that too.
Rest of the trip I was on cloud nine. Bellies and souls, same building. Underwear and the Word. If they want, they can even catch a Christian station on the way to checkout and toe-tap the whole time. Takes all kinds. Same circus. What a time.
A couple thousand years back it was a darker road. Saints like Stephen — and Paul, and so many more — paid dear for naming Him. We’ve come a long way.
The sacrifice isn’t the whole story. As Paul told Timothy, it’s the ending of a life well lived and a race well run.
The story keeps the same spine, different names and aisles: a God who loved the world enough to send His Son, and a person who loved that Son enough to know what it was worth.
