Alrightyroo. Gonna start with a bit of knowledge I picked up along the way. I heard the entirety of human wisdom lives between 4 and 14. At 4 we know every question known to mankind. At 14 we know every answer.
Not sure how scientific that is. They both take the patience of Job, and, will absolutely prove the point of this askapop if ya stick with me … And, please, at no point during this pop feel as though there’s any less than a full fledged two by four in this guy’s eye…
As a parent or caregiver, how many times have we checked every box and still had sad eyes look up at us? They know we have to work. They know the spreadsheet, the conference call, the overtime is how the lights stay on. “Just a sec.” “I’ll be right there.”
One Christmas break the OG lil’bit took some of those decorative bottle cleaners we’d used to wrap gifts and fashioned an earpiece out of it. He had the toy laptop he’d opened the day before, looked at me, and said, “Dad, I’m just like you.”
I didn’t wait until the break was over before the email went to my boss. Changes needed to be made. Yes, I still work a crazy amount of hours. But I made a conscious decision for him to see me less with that laptop and earpiece and more with keys to the park — or with nothing at all, just waitin’ to listen.
Martha wasn’t doing anything wrong when the most important visitor of her life stopped by the house in Bethany. She was doing what needed doing. Mary spent the minute on the thing that wouldn’t keep. The dishes could wait.
Psalm 90 asks God to teach us to number our days. Not so we panic. So we notice which “sec” was actually the string.
Just a thought from a guy who definitely doesn’t get it right all the time, but tries, fails, and knows who to ask for help.
