A lot of y’all know that I’m named after my dad, who was named after his dad, who was named after his dad… that makes me the fourth. But what most folks don’t know is that my parents “technically” didn’t follow the rules when I was born. (Hmmm… is that where I got it from?!)
According to mom, on one of the naming documents, my dad asked them to add his favorite nickname for me. Because back then in school, they would only call you by whatever name was officially on your records. He was already looking out for me while I was still a screaming little guy.
And just like any good son… when I got to school, what did I do? I wanted to be called by my proper name, of course! 😂
Today is Dad’s birthday. He’s been firmly seated in the church of New Jerusalem for the past 15 years now, but not a day goes by that I’m not doing something he taught me, saying something he used to say, or remembering a lesson he imparted.
We were blessed that Dad was around and healthy enough for the OG lil’bit to meet him and spend time with Grandpa Cecil — getting his first fishing pole and train set from him. I wish they could’ve had more time together, but that’s my job now — to pass down what he passed to me.
When you think about it, that’s really what we’re all called to do as parents, grandparents, or anyone that’s invested in the next generation. It’s not just about books or stories from the past. It’s about the time spent, the lessons shared, and the love of showing up day after day.
That investment my dad (and mom!) made paid off. And now our family is working hard to make sure it pays off for the next generation too. When we fall short (not if, but when), we know our Perfect Father in Heaven is there — not only to fill in the gaps, but to lift us and our little ones up so we can soar on wings like eagles.
Just some thoughts from a very lucky son, wishing his dad a very happy birthday in Heaven.

Do you have any wise tips or lessons that your dad or mom taught you?
(I’ll start us off — my favorite marriage tip from Dad: “You know when the next words out of your mouth are gonna start a fight… when you feel it coming, walk into another room, wait 10 minutes. If you still want to say it, then it’s worth discussing.” By then the temperature is down and it usually turns into a real conversation instead of a fight!)
