It’s that time of year again !!! No, i’m not talking about the creative ways that hardware stores come up with wanting to sell us devices to take up room in our garages, hey that new table saw…. Er, back to business Cecil!!! … No, i’m talkin’ about all of the fun filled summer programs that are put on throughout communities, organizations, and especially churches for the kids while they’re out of school.
My new job keeps busier, but, for a good 10 year stretch or so i was able to take 1/2 days of work off during the week of our VBS to volunteer and i learned something very valuable (let’s call it covert observation!) that i was then able to report back to both my Leadership Development Committee as well as to our Christian Ed team members (although they didn’t need my report as they were all side by side with me!) …
The kids learned, laughed, had a great time, made crafts and friends, and all of the other things that we’d PLANNED on them doing … CHECK … But, we also had teens, adults, and seniors learning just as much, if not more !!!! Folks of all ages working together to prepare snacks, work on crafts, get the games ready, the music, the … Well … You get my drift …
I saw laughter and friendships develop, numbers exchange, and greetings in fellowship hall and during church throughout the year(s) long after the the last of the chaos of the “hot dog social” would wrap up the week-long event …
Whether it’s VBS, a car club, a model airplane group or anything that allows one generation to share with the next, anytime you can come up with a way to get PEOPLE sharing and talking across generations with a common goal it builds a better community where the folks are both teaching and learning from one another …
Just a thought from a guy that’s been incredibly blessed to get to learn from some brilliant young minds over the past 20 years and continues to be amazed at the questions that they bring to the table !!!
